Ministry Approves Acquisition of Rafale-Marine Fighter Jets and Scorpene Submarines from France
In a momentous milestone, the defence ministry has given the go-ahead for the purchase of three Scorpene diesel-electric submarines and 26 Rafale-Marine fighter planes from France. The two significant agreements will now be formally announced at the upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Emmanuel Macron as a result of this decision.
The "acceptance of necessity (AoN)" for these purchases by the Indian Navy has been granted by the Defence Acquisitions Council, which is led by Rajnath Singh. According to sources, the total cost of the purchases is anticipated to reach Rs 80,000 crore (about 9 billion euros).
The contracts will not be signed, though, until after lengthy techno-commercial negotiations—which could take many months. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will give its final clearance.
India will purchase 22 single-seat planes and four twin-seat trainers, along with related tools, weaponry, simulators, spare parts, crew training, and logistical support, under the planned intergovernmental agreement for the Rafale-M fighters. The three Scorpene submarines, on the other hand, will be built at Mazagon Docks in Mumbai and will use DRDO-developed air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology to increase underwater endurance. Five to six years after the contract is signed, the first modern submarine is anticipated to be ready.
After extensive testing last year, in which it surpassed the American F/A-18 Super Hornet, the Rafale-M was chosen as the Indian Navy's first choice. The Indian Air Force's September 2016 induction of 36 Rafales increased the logistical benefit of selecting the French fighter.
These purchases demonstrate India's dedication to increasing its defense capabilities and strategic alliances with France, laying the groundwork for cutting-edge naval capabilities and enhancing national security.
